Used truck air tanks & air brake reservoirs

Air tanks (also known as air brake reservoirs) store compressed air for the truck’s braking system and other pneumatic circuits. They allow the compressor to build and maintain pressure so that the brake chambers, air suspension and auxiliary consumers always have enough air available. In this category we list used OEM truck air tanks & brake air reservoirs removed from late-model European lorries.

Current examples include Frauenthal air tanks for MAN TGA/TGL/TGS/TGX in 8L, 20L and 35L sizes, plus DAF XF/CF Euro 6 air tanks from 7L up to 25L at 12.5 bar, as well as 20L tanks for Mercedes Actros/Axor and brackets for Volvo FH/FM/FMХ. Each item is listed with OEM numbers, capacity, pressure rating and photos of the exact tank in stock.

What you will find in the Air Tanks category

Stock in the Air Tanks category changes as we dismantle more vehicles, but it typically includes:

  • brake air tanks / reservoirs in common sizes such as 7L, 8L, 10.5L, 15.3L, 20L, 25L and 35L;
  • tanks rated up to 12.5 bar for service and parking brake circuits;
  • Frauenthal-manufactured tanks supplied as OEM equipment on DAF, MAN, Mercedes and other trucks;
  • air tanks with different port layouts and thread sizes, suitable for various chassis positions;
  • mounting brackets for selected tanks, especially on Volvo FH/FM/FMХ and similar vehicles.

Each listing shows the capacity in litres, maximum working pressure where known, main OE numbers and clear images of the ports, brackets and overall shape to help you compare with the tank on your own truck.

Truck brands & typical applications

Most air tanks in this category come from mainstream European trucks such as: DAF XF/CF, MAN TGA/TGL/TGS/TGX, Mercedes-Benz Actros/Axor and Volvo FH/FM/FMХ, with occasional stock for other brands. These are genuine OEM reservoirs, many produced by Frauenthal and other approved suppliers for the original vehicle manufacturers.

Typical applications for used air tanks include:

  • replacing corroded or damaged tanks that have failed inspection or MOT;
  • repairing air leaks or pressure loss caused by cracked welds or damaged fittings on the tank;
  • restoring original air system layout after accident damage or chassis modification;
  • upgrading to correct OEM tanks after temporary or non-standard replacements.

How truck air tanks work in the air brake system

In an air brake system, the compressor builds pressure and fills the air tanks. From there, air is distributed through valves and lines to the brake chambers, parking brake circuits, air suspension and other pneumatic devices. Many trucks use multiple reservoirs (for example wet, primary and secondary tanks) to separate circuits and improve safety in case of a failure in one part of the system.

Correctly specified and maintained air tanks help the system to:

  • build pressure quickly after start-up;
  • maintain stable pressure during repeated braking and long downhill descents;
  • protect the brake system from moisture and contamination when used with a functioning air dryer;
  • meet legal requirements for commercial vehicle braking performance.

How to choose the correct air tank or reservoir

To make sure you order the right air tank for your truck, always check:

  • OE or OEM part number stamped or labelled on the original tank;
  • tank capacity in litres (for example 7L, 10.5L, 15.3L, 20L, 25L or 35L);
  • maximum working pressure, often 12.5 bar on modern European trucks;
  • port size, thread and layout – number of ports, thread sizes (for example M22 x 1.5) and their positions around the tank;
  • bracket type and orientation – saddle brackets, welded feet or band clamps;
  • truck brand, model, year and Euro class, as tank configuration can change even within the same series.

If you are unsure, you can contact us with your VIN or registration number and photos of the current air tank, including any part number markings. Our team will help you cross-check compatibility and select a suitable tank from our stock. For more tips, see How to Find the Right Part and Compatibility & VIN Policy.

Tested used OEM air tanks from dismantled trucks

Where possible, we run and check donor vehicles before dismantling to confirm that the air system builds and holds pressure correctly. During removal, our technicians inspect each air tank for heavy external corrosion, dents, cracked welds and damaged ports or mounting points. Tanks that do not meet our standards are rejected; only usable reservoirs are cleaned, labelled and stored indoors.

Because we specialise in used OEM truck parts, you benefit from:

  • tanks designed specifically for heavy-duty commercial vehicle air brake systems;
  • correct capacity and pressure ratings for your truck’s configuration;
  • honest condition descriptions and detailed photos of the actual tank supplied.
